Activities Blog - April Review

Spring is definitely in the air, and the sunny days are getting longer, but one of my recent visits to our services in Elgin saw me driving through heavy snow to get there!

It was nice to catch up with the people we support there, finding out what they enjoyed doing in their spare time, and how we could help them to take part in some of our activity sessions.

Two of the girls we support in Angus, Shelby and Justyna, have been enjoying trying out some new healthy eating recipes recently. It has been great working with them via zoom to create some tasty and nutritious dishes.

We have already made a very healthy version of carbonara (one of Shelby’s favourite dishes) as well as trying out making Egyptian food, and cooking a fish pie from scratch.

Once the girls decide on a recipe, they go to the shops to get their ingredients in, and read through the recipes to see what utensils, blenders and pans etc.. that they need so they are all prepared before we start the zoom.

As well as gaining valuable cooking skills, these sessions are also teaching the girls about budgeting when they shop for the ingredients and portion sizes. One week they learned that they didn’t need to use all of the kofta mix in one go, and that they could portion it up and freeze some and defrost it to make more another day.

Recently, five people we support from across the city and shire were treated to a fab experience day at Aberdeen Sports Village. Bobby, Irene, Grant, Emma and Marie got to try out a range of sports at ASV, including football, badminton and table tennis, before taking in a football game at Pittodrie.

Emma enjoyed trying out badminton and she is really keen to play regularly. We have since been able to hook her up with a local group in Inverurie that plays weekly, that she is going to visit to try it out.
