"I first volunteered to be a befriender two years ago now. It has been brilliant - I've made a friend for life."Michael, who befriends Malcolm
Volunteers are an integral part of our work at Inspire and help us provide person-centred services to the people we support in a variety of ways.
With a little time, you can make a big difference. Whether you would like to help on a regular basis or just have a few hours on a one-off occasion to help at a specific event then we have a role for you.
Our volunteer befrienders spend time with the people we support on a 1-1 basis, enjoying shared interests and hobbies. We match our befriending pairs following a comprehensive process where we consider personalities and interests. Full training and ongoing support is provided.
Our ad-hoc volunteers help raise the profile of the organisation and vital funds towards our work by helping marshal running events, assisting with bag packs, shaking buckets at public occasions or serving meals at our Supper Clubs.
Volunteering is not only beneficial for Inspire, it gives you the opportunity to get involved with the local community, try out new activities and get the satisfaction of helping others.
Contact our Volunteer Co-ordinator, Chris Simpson, on 01224 289018 or email email@example.com for further information.
Mike & Stuart's Story
By Stuart (Inspire Befriender)
Befriending is something that I always wanted to do but never knew how to go about it or what it really involved. When my wife started working for Inspire she was able to explain to me the benefits of being a befriender so I decided that this is something that I really wanted to do.
I have always enjoyed helping people and supporting them to be the best they can be but nothing had prepared me for the utter joy and pleasure that I would feel getting to be Mike’s friend. He has changed my life - the way I see things, the way people see each other but most of all the kindness that he shows others.
I have been Mike’s befriender for several months now. We are regulars at the Supper Club that Inspire organise and the Pool Club on a Wednesday evening at the Holburn Bar. We have ventured far in our short time. We went to Knockhill Racing Circuit to see the car racing, we had a super time and I really enjoyed Mike's banter and seeing how happy he was speaking to everyone about cars.
We went to the V8 Breakfast Morning hosted by The Fennel one Sunday, enjoyed walks with my dog Bentley (who Mike adores) and helped at the Firewalk to help fund-raise money for Inspire.
I have truly enjoyed everything that we have done so far and I am looking forward to many more special events with him.
"I like my befriender, he is a good laugh. I enjoy going out with him, he says funny things and I like him because he is my friend Stuartie"Mike, supported by Inspire
