Michaels cafe academy story

"I'd been going to college for eight years before starting Café Academy. I really enjoyed it and seeing my friends every day was great but just doing course after course wasn't going to help get me a job, and that's what I wanted more than anything.

I was referred to Café Academy and enjoyed it from day one. They helped me with my reading and writing so I could get my qualifications. The best bits were being in the kitchen and working as part of a team. And I loved speaking to the customers in Café Coast.

I was really excited when I found out I was getting a placement at Chalmers Bakery for a week. I'd done some of this kind of thing at College and wanted to see what is was like to work in a real bakery. The people were nice but after a couple of days I decided that this wasn't the right work for me. I missed the customers.

I kept attending the job clubs and was chuffed to get an interview with Sainsbury's to work in their Café. Kelly from Inspire helped me during my interview and set up a two-week work trial. By the second week, they'd offered me a job. I was so happy.

Kelly continued to help me and also got funding through Remploy for a scribe. This meant I could do my staff induction at the same time as my new colleagues. I'm so happy at work and I've made lots of new friends. I get to do what I am good at now and have fun chatting to all our customers.

Having my own job means that I can help my mum out and buy more computer games."
